In case you hadn’t heard, Erika Alexander has been busy lately. Just last month we attended the launch and book signing of her new comic book series, “Concrete Park,” with husband, Tony Puryear and brother, Robert Alexander.
UnleashTheFanBoy.com gave the issue an 8.5.
As the fall television season rolls in, one thing is for certain, there’s a whole lot more color on our TV screens this year and Erika Alexander has joined the party.
With series and season premieres like “Gotham,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Chicago Fire,” “How to Get Away With Murder,” Red Band Society,” and more all prominently featuring women of color, it makes you wonder if we’re finally making a major turn in the right direction in the name of diversity on TV.
Another new show that aired this fall is the New Orleans edition of the successful parent-series, NCIS, which stars CCH Pounder. Alexander guest starred as the commander of a U.S. Naval ship in episode two (“Carrier”) of the new series.
The moment I found out “NCIS: New Orleans” was a thing, my first thought was, “Jesus not another installment of terrible New Orleans accents.” I’ve been dreading the premiere of the series ever since.
Every New Orleanian (transplant, adopted, or native) knows no one ever gets the New Orleans accent right. It’s a special blend of dialects and idiosyncrasies impossible to explain. So imagine my surprise when I started watching episode two and discover the oral cacophony I was anticipating was noticeably absent. It meant I could enjoy the episode.
Lucas Black’s authentic (and heavy) country accent is swoon-worthy and given to his character on the show who, like Black, is a native of Alabama. Thank you CBS for not trying to tell the world that any country or southern accent is a New Orleans accent.
Alexander’s Commander Louanne Bates finds herself assisting the NCIS team when it’s discovered her ship or one of the sailors on board may be responsible for an outbreak of the bubonic plague.
It’s a great episode and a promising series and more importantly Alexander’s performance as a Navy Commander doesn’t owe me a thing.
