iTunes preview of Flying Lotus’ latest single “Never Catch Me” ft. Kendrick Lamar is now available for fans to purchase! In preparation for the highly anticipated release of the LA based producer’s fifth LP, You’re Dead!, both visual and audio for the single can be experienced at www.flying-lotus.com. The album will be available for fans in the US October 7 and a day earlier for fans in the UK.
Projected to be a sonically transcending listening experience, You’re Dead! features both impressive and expansive collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy (Lotus’ rap alias), Snoop Dogg, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat and Niki Randa. Expected to be a musically metaphysical feat, the album is a total summation of the initiation of life experienced within death. Imagine a second line led by Sun Ra and TuPac. What else would we expect from the great-nephew of John and Alice Coltrane with influences from Dr. Dre?
Easily one of the most distinguished names in alternative music, not only is Flying Lotus an artist, producer and innovator of sound but also a cinefile. Lotus recently scored Kendrick Lamar’s cinematic production m.A.A.d, Lamar’s visual concept of album Good Kid, m.A.A.d City. Directed by Khalil Joseph in his usual trancelike sequence, the music for short film m.A.A.d compliments the directive as Lotus experiments with negative spaces and loud sounds for an illusory feel. The short film premiered in LA as a part of the Sundance Institute NextFest.
Lotus was able to garner both national and international success in the world of alternative and experimental music by embracing limitless ideas of composition while exploring the breadth and purity of sound, excluding none and maximizing all.
Conceptually consistent, death within You’re Dead!, is cleverly used as a literary conceit. Here death can either 1.) be the transporting element in transcending the ordinary or 2.) be a direct result of transcendence itself, yielding an experience so awesome it could only be experienced elsewhere; and here that place is death. Either way? I’m ready for Steve Ellison’s metaphysical concept to come to life this fall and I hope you are too.
You’re Dead! features nearly celestial (and original) album artwork by Japanese comic book artist Shintaro Kago.
