Releasing her third EP entitled Z this past April, SZA, the 23 year old Jersey native affiliated with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) is generating attention across the web and within the industry and rightfully so.
SZA’s humble delivery is captivating for both eclectic PBR&B (abbrev. Pabst Blue Ribbon, a beer commonly associated with hipsters used in creating the sub-genre PBR&B) lovers and syncopated melody aficionados alike.
With creative lyrics, sultry vocals and an in-full fluid production that have caught the attention of artists throughout the industry, you can expect to become acquainted with the beautiful songstress this year.
Sampling Marvin Gaye’s ‘Mandota’, ‘Sweet November’ is one of my favorites on the EP. With tracks like ‘Hi Jack’ produced by Toro y Moi juxtaposed with the 80s synthpop sound and MGMT feel found in ‘Julia’ produced by Felix Snow and Dace Free, there is no doubt that Z is an established work of art.
Z yields room for listeners to actually become familiar with SZA as an artist, limiting features to Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah Rashad and Chance the Rapper. With no set demographic based on sound and lyrics alone, SZA‘s music is perfect for all audiences. Her consistent relaxed tempos and minimalist R&B delivery create a subjective appeal.
In 2013 SZA self-released EPs See.SZA.Run and S. With the amassing success of Z and the solid backing of TDE , one can only hope for a solid A LP to be released in the near future.
You can listen to and download Z here . Enjoy!
